A handsome early-to-mid 19th century French Empire commode in warm walnut, distinguished by its neoclassical form and exceptional original brass hardware. Three generous drawers are fitted with brass bail pulls and keyhole escutcheons, while flanking pilaster columns rise from brass feet to brass capitals — a refined expression of the Empire vocabulary drawn from classical antiquity.
The walnut has developed a rich, honeyed patina over two centuries of use, with the natural grain of the wood beautifully visible across the drawer fronts. Pieces of this quality — retaining their original hardware and structural integrity — are increasingly difficult to find. Substantial enough to anchor a bedroom, entry hall, or salon, yet refined enough to complement the most considered interior.
